Four Memorial Day
Programs
in Elgin
Bluff City Cemetery Program to Recognize
Blackhawk War Veterans
There will be four Memorial Day programs to choose from
again this year. The first of these will be a Catholic
mass at 9:00 a.m. at Mt. Hope Cemetery. At 9:15 a.m. a
program to honor those buried at Lakewood Memorial Park
will be held at that cemetery.
A service to pay tribute to those who lost their lives
at sea will take place at 9:45 am at the Elgin’s
Veterans Memorial Park adjacent to the Gail Borden Public
Library. The program will feature the Elgin Choral Union
and an address by U.S. Navy veteran Dale Dopkins.
At 11:00 a.m. a program which has been an Elgin tradition
since 1868, will take place at Bluff City Cemetery. This
years’ service will be dedicated to all returning
military personnel and recognize the 180th anniversary
of General Winfield Scott’s march through the area
during the Blackhawk War. Special tribute will be made
to two veterans from that war buried in what is now the
John Duerr Forest Preserve south of the city.
The program will include Elgin historian Bill Briska as
the featured speaker. Music will be provided by the Elgin
Choral Union and the Larkin High School band.
Please bring your family and join in on one of these events
that pay tribute to the real meaning of Memorial Day.

Elgin Patriotic Memorial Association
